LSU offense and defense fail, Tigers fall to UCLA

Written by Cameron Roberson on .

So things didn't exactly go as planned Sunday night in Omaha. LSU fell 2-1 to the UCLA Bruins thanks to uncharacteristic defensive miscues and an offense that couldn't put a runner in scoring position in the latter innings. Even Aaron Nola wasn't lights out, but he didn't allow an earned run, again. More past the break.

LSU has punched their ticket to the program's 16th College World Series, smothering Omaha 11-1 in Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field. The Tigers rode JaCoby Jone's phenomenal 4-4 at the plate en route to the victory. LSU is beginning to play championship caliber baseball at just the right time.

LSU beats Oklahoma 2-0 behind Nola's gem

Written by Cameron Roberson on .

LSU won the first game of the Super Regional round, defeating Oklahoma 2-0 in Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field. We were promised a pitcher's duel Friday night with Jonathan Gray from Oklahoma and LSU's own Aaron Nola taking the hill for their respective teams. That could not have been a more apt description of the game. Jonathan Gray showed why he was the third overall pick of the MLB draft pitching magnificently, just not quite and magnificent as Aaron Nola. Read past the jump for more.

Cody Glenn reinstated for Super Regionals

Written by Cameron Roberson on .

Paul Mainieri announced today that Cody Glenn has been reinstated to the baseball team for this weekend's Super Regional against Oklahoma. The team voted unanimously to reinstate him.

This poses an interesting question for the weekend. Obviously LSU will want Aaron Nola to face OU's Jonathan Gray. Who will Mainieri throw against OU's Dillon Overton? Eades was rough in his outing this past weekend, while Glenn, who's outpitched Eades in the past few weeks in this man's opinion, hasn't pitched in two weeks. It will be interesting to see who gets the ball second.

Written by Cameron Roberson on .

Photo via The Advocate

The Baton Rouge Regional news began on Thursday, with word coming down that LSU's usual third starter, LHP Cody Glenn, was to be suspended for the entire weekend. That would turn out to be just the beginning of a bizarre weekend for LSU but ended on a high note with LSU taking the championship game from ULL 5-1 behind stellar pitching from Brent Bonvillian and Nick Rumbelow, while being led at the plate by none other than Mason Katz and Alex Bregman. Follow past the jump for more on the weekend.

LSU & Wisconsin almost certainly will play in Houston...and Lambeau?

Written by Cameron Roberson on .

Lambeau field

In comments at the SEC spring meetings in Destin, Florida, LSU AD Joe Alleva said it's an almost certainty LSU and Wisconsin will play in Houston's Reliant Stadium in 2014 with another date in iconic Lambeau Field sometime in the future after that in 2016, 2017, or 2018. Alleva said the contract is waiting to be signed.

This continues LSU's recent trend of playing neutral site games, such as the Cowboys Classic in Arlington, TX & the Chick-Fil-A Kick-Off game in Atlanta, GA. This also continues a recent national trend of playing these big out of conference neutral site games. It's an easy way for an athletic departmen to make $3-$4 million, which is more than they'd receive for a home game.

LSU No. 4 National Seed in NCAA Tournament

Written by Cameron Roberson on .

LSU was named the No. 4 national seed in the NCAA baseball tournament today behind #1 North Carolina, #2 Vanderbilt, and #3 Oregon State. Feelings about being the #4 national seed aside, LSU is a national seed which means home field advantage through Super Regionals. The Tigers are paired with the Blacksburg, Va. regional, so the Tigers could see Virginia Tech or Oklahoma should they advance. All in all, a manageable draw through the tournament for the Tigers. A potential matchip with Vanderbilt in the CWS finals is also still alive, as both teams are on different sides of the bracket.

A more in-depth look at the tournament to come later in the week.

LSU Wins 10th SEC Baseball Tournament Title

Written by Cameron Roberson on .

LSU defeated Vanderbilt 5-4 in 11 innings behind strong performances from Jared Foster, Chris Cotton and little-used Chris Sciambra. Sciambra doubled-in the winning run in the top of the 11th and Chris Cotton got his 3rd save and 16th of the season in shutting down Vanderbilt in the bottom of the frame. It was LSU's 10th SEC tournament title, which is 3 more than anyone else in the conference (Mississippi State has 7 titles). Coach Paul Mainieri has brought 5 teams to Hoover and won the title 4 times.

Cotton was named tournament MVP while 3B Christian Ibarra, OF Jared Foster & DH Sean McMullen also made the all-tournament team.

The Tigers were also named one of the 16 regional sites for the NCAA tournament. At 11am tomorrow seeding will be announced, which LSU is expected to receive one of eight national seeds.
